Story Starters for Kids

Sometimes it's hard to think of something to write. Start a notebook or even a decorated box. In it, write anything that might spark a story idea--a silly sentence, a weird character, a question...almost anything could turn into a story. Then when you're stuck, look through your notebook or pull an idea out of your box. Here are some to get you started. You don't have to use the exact sentence here. Just use it to start your own ideas flowing. You can even change things--maybe it was an alien that showed up instead of a dragon.

1. The plan was absolutely perfect--until the dragon showed up.

2. I always heard leprechauns were supposed to grant you three wishes--but the one I found had it all backwards. He expected me to grant his wishes--and wait until you hear what they were.

3. People always think being a rock star's daughter must be so cool. If only they knew...

4. My uncle is a scientist and he told me there was absolutely no way there could be Martians. If that's true, then what is that in the oak tree outside my bedroom window?

5. I've heard a lot about bullying and prejudice in other schools, but I never thought it could happen in my school...until the new girl moved in.

6. If I had a time machine, I'd go back one week and when I saw the box, I would just keep right on going. There is no way I'd open it this time, knowing what I do now.

7. When I found out my neighbor's pet monkey knew sign language, all kinds of ideas came into my mind. This could be the start of a great summer!

8. I just wanted to be like Harriet the Spy--only better, since I didn't plan to get caught. I never imagined I'd stumble on a real mystery!

9. My plans for the summer included swimming, hiking with my friends, working in my garden, and reading. They did not include having my parents decide to take me on a trip to visit my relatives on another planet--since I didn't even know my mother came from another planet!

10. The purple hair should have been a clue--the new boy was going to shake things up!
